Cell Phone Movies to Show @ SF International Film Festival

April 28, 2006 11:11 PM | Cell Phone TV | Comments (1)

This week at the San Francisco International Film Festival, 20 movies made for mobile devices with 2-inch-by-3-inch screens will be shown as part of the festival's Pocket Cinema program.

Two of the movies are as follows:

1 - Spookspeak, by Katherin McInnis a four-minute film parodying the National Security Agency's Echelon electronic eavesdropping program.  Her movie blends text and audio of about 300 watchwords that, when used in e-mails or cell-phone conversations, allegedly trigger further scrutiny by the NSA's spy systems.

2 - Suprematist Kapital by San Francisco filmmakers James T. Hong and Yin-Ju Chen, which tells a five-minute history of Western capitalism.

The Pocket Cinema program highlights the art world's contribution to mobile video, which the entertainment industry hopes will be the next big content boom. Fox, for example, is releasing mobisodes of the TV show Prison Break, while Touchstone Television Productions is producing a version of Lost just for mobiles.

Cell Phone Memory Cards a Threat to iPods

April 25, 2006 3:36 PM | Apple | Samsung | Technology | Comments (0)

In 2005 the average capacity of memory cards sold for use in cell phones was 112 MB per card.  By 2010 it is predicted that this will have increased to around 1.6 GB, equivalent to an annual average growth rate of over 70 percent.

Massive growth in the sale of removable memory cards for cell phones, about 160 percent last year, may indicate that the mobile phone will truly emerge as a competitor to the iPod.

The 2 GB MultiMediaCard (MMC) from Samsung  could spark the convergence trend for mobile phones, raising the level of competition Apple's iPod battles in the marketplace.

Motorola Cell Phone Patent - Stimulating to Replace Vibrating

April 20, 2006 6:12 PM | Motorola | Technology | Comments (2)

motorola_patent.jpg

Motorola has patented an apparatus for stimulating areas of a body comprising: a wireless communication device that alerts a user of an incoming message through a user interface.

When the wearer/user receives an incoming call, message, or data delivery, an electric potential is placed across the electrodes and an electric field created by the electrodes physically stimulates the body, such as areas of the epidermis and muscles under the epidermis of the wearer, thereby alerting the wearer of the incoming call in a completely silent manner. The potential can be in the form of an alternating potential that produces an alternating current between the opposing electrodes.

According to the patent application, current cell phones have tried to silently notify a wearer through a vibrating alert, but often times are still unintentionally distracting to others. The vibration produces an audible sound, especially when the wireless device is left on a surface such as a table top, easily detected in quiet environments such as business meetings.
