Sprint To Launch the Sanyo Katana Next Month

Sprint will launch the new Sanyo Katana on July 10th of this year.  The new handset is a high-profile handset like recent models from other companies, like the Motorola RAZR.  The Katana is thin clamshell that will compete with the Samsung A900 for style conscience buyers. The main drawback is that the Katana doesn't have EV-DO like the A900 does. Features of the Sanyo Katana include:

Verizon To Begin To Pro-Rate Early Termination Fee

Denny Strigl, president and chief executive officer of Verizon Wireless, announced that Verizon Wireless will begin to pro-rate the early termination fee (ETF) for customers nationwide in the fall.

Verizon Wireless is the first major U.S. carrier to commit to a national policy to pro-rate the ETF. The company will include new terms in customer contracts that will progressively reduce the amount a customer has to pay if they terminate their contract with Verizon Wireless before their committed term expires. The pro-rate will apply to contracts signed or renewed after the policy takes effect, and the amount owed will vary depending on the time remaining in the contract.

To that end, Strigl outlined benefits Verizon Wireless will add to its Worry Free Guarantee® for customers who pay their bills online via the company’s Web site. The additional guarantees include:



 

Sprint & Sanyo Introduce Cell Phone with Parental Control

To help parents stay connected with their children and maintain some control of their children's wireless phone usage, Sprint and SANYO today introduce the Sprint PCS Vision® Phone SCP-2400 by SANYO.This phone offers a free parental control feature, allowing parents to easily manage whom the child calls and who can call the child. A parent simply enters the phone numbers of those individuals the child is permitted to call and/or receive calls from in the phone's address book, and then clicks on the Parental Control icon on the main menu to limit use to Phone Book Only for both incoming and/or outgoing direct calls. After the parent limits the phone's use in this way, other phone numbers would be restricted. Nokia Announces New Cell Phone TV Trial in Sweden

Today Nokia announced a new commercial DVB-H pilot in Stockholm with Teracom in Sweden. Nokia is supplying the Nokia Mobile Broadcast System 3.0 and Nokia N92 mobile TV devices to the pilot which will last from October to December 2006 and includes 400 consumers. The project is a co-operation between ATG, Boxer, Nokia, Sveriges Radio, Sveriges Television/UR, Telenor and Teracom.
 
The pilot participants will be able to watch fourteen TV channels and listen to four radio channels in the Stockholm city region, where a network has been built for high quality indoor and outdoor coverage. The objective is to evaluate what Swedish consumers think about commercial broadcast mobile TV.
 
ATG, Boxer, Sveriges Radio and Sveriges Television will provide content for the pilot. The test will be delivered using Nokia Mobile Broadcast Solution 3.0, and the pilot participants will use mobile devices from Nokia, the Nokia N92. Teracom will be responsible for the network, the broadcast and operating of the platform. 



 

Nokia Initiates Lawsuit for Copying The 7260 Handset

Nokia has initiated a civil litigation in Beijing, China against two companies for manufacturing and selling mobile phones that copy the proprietary and legally protected industrial designs of the Nokia 7260 mobile phone model.
 
Two of the named defendants in the case are Shenzhen Telsda Mobile Communication Industry Developing Co. Ltd and Song Xun Da Zhong Ke Electronic (Shenzhen) Co. Ltd, both of whom are Chinese phone manufacturers based in Shenzhen, China.
 
Nokia has also named the distributors of the mobile phones, Beijing Tongwanbao Commerce & Trade Co. Ltd An Wai Avenue No. 2 Branch and Beijing Xin Tongwanbao Commerce & Trade Co. Ltd, as co-defendants in the case.



 

The LG LP4100 Cell Phone Breathalyzer to Hit U.S. Market Soon

The LG LP4100 has been very successful in Korea with its equipped breathalyzer.  That's right a breathalyzer.  What will they think of next?  The phones have sold over 200,000 units in Korea in 2005 and it continues to be very successful.

LG recently showcased the LP4100 handset at CES in Vegas.  Like camera and video features that have been very successful, the LP 4100 with its breathalyzer is anticipated to be a hit in the U.S. market, scheduled for release later this year. 

The LP4100 breathalyzer when blown into gives a warning and displays a nifty little animation of a car swerving on a road and crashing into traffic cones.




 

Telecom Industry & W3C Agree on Guidelines for Mobile Web Sites

w3c_main.png Today, W3C reached an important milestone toward its mission of making it as easy to use the Web on a mobile device as on a desktop computer. W3C has published Mobile Web Best Practices a Candidate Recommendation, an indication of broad consensus on the technical content of the document.

W3C now invites implementation experience from the community. Industry leaders are declaring their support for the guidelines, which explain how to develop Web sites that work on mobile devices. "There are many devices, but one Web," said Daniel Appelquist, chair of the Mobile Web Best Practices Working Group. "Practical guidelines on how to create content once that can be delivered to the plethora of devices saves developers and organizations time and money, and has the added benefit of not breaking the Web. "

Donate Your Old Phone To A Good Cause

Don't toss your old cell phone in the trash.  Recycle it!  Just like computers, cell phones contain mercury and lead that are harmful to the environment.

There are several organizations that reuse cell phones for a variety of charitable causes.  For example, "Call to Protect", is a nationwide effort that adds air time to donated cell phones and gives them to domestic violence shelters and agencies.

Cingular Launches the Nokia 6102i

Cingular Wireless has launched the Nokia 6102i which is an update to the 6101 /6102. Features remain similar, with Bluetooth being the main addition. T-Mobile launched its version of the device, the 6103, last month (see article).

Nokia & Sanyo CDMA Partnership Breaks Down

Nokia announced today that it will not be forming the new CDMA device company with SANYO it preliminarily announced on February 14, 2006. Nokia decided not to pursue its earlier plan as it concluded the terms and conditions of the proposed partnership were not satisfactory and in the best interests of Nokia's long term success. In addition to an already financially prohibitive CDMA ecosystem in general, recent developments may indicate that the CDMA emerging markets business case is looking more challenging. 
 
Moving forward, Nokia intends to selectively participate in key CDMA markets, with special focus on North America. Nokia plans to ramp down its own CDMA R&D and manufacturing by April 2007. Nokia is evaluating opportunities to leverage its existing CDMA product development infrastructure and assets in profitable parts of the business. 


 

Sprint & Interscope Deliver 1st-ever Cell Phone Music Series

This summer, only Sprint customers hold the ultimate “tickets” and “backstage passes” to the music world’s hottest new virtual “club.” Sprint and Interscope Records today announced the premiere of the Sprint Music Series – the first-of-its-kind, made-for-mobile studio sessions available exclusively on Sprint TVSM, Channel 33.

The Sprint Music Series features a mix of established and up-and-coming artists including Busta Rhymes, Dashboard Confessional, Keane, Mobb Deep, Olivia, Robin Thicke and Wolfmother, with additional artists to be announced soon.

Each session from the Sprint Music Series will include exclusive audio and video of an artist or group in an up-close unfiltered performance of three to four songs and an intimate one-on-one interview. Sprint Announces Roaming Deals w/ Mexico & Canada

Customers of Sprint now have more international locations to easily access mobile data applications, thanks to new reciprocal wireless service deals with Bell Canada and Iusacell in Mexico.

The North America data roaming agreements are part of an aggressive international services expansion by the U.S. wireless data leader throughout 2006 and beyond.

Sprint is facilitating data access availability for U.S. customers north and south of the border by augmenting CDMA voice roaming agreements with a data roaming capability.

Under the reciprocal agreements, customers will be able to seamlessly access email, Internet and corporate applications in Canada and Mexico using select PCS phones, smart devices and mobile broadband cards.
