Google has recently enabled users of Google Calendar to now access their schedules from their mobile phones. When users log on to Google Calendar from their Web-capable mobile phone, they see appoints complete with date, time, location, and description, formatted in a way for easy reading on small screens. Users can scroll through the day's events, and also previous and forthcoming events.

RIM To Launch a Wi-Fi / Cellular Enabled BlackBerry

May 28, 2007 5:13 PM | Blackberry | Comments (0)

A Wi-Fi / cellular enabled BlackBerry will be launched later this year, according to Research In Motion's (RIM) co-CEO Jim Balsillie.  Mr. Balsillie made the announcement earlier this week at the JP Morgan Technology Conference.

Motorola, Nokia and HTC have released Wi-Fi enabled devices as early as last year. However, RIM has been hinting at a Wi-Fi device in the works.

The BlackBerry Enterprise Server  already supports roaming for customers traveling between multiple operators, so the server will treat Wi-Fi networks just like additional cellular networks. That capability enables the handoff of data connections and voice calls between Wi-Fi and cellular networks as customers move.  Avi Greengart, analyst at Current Analysis, stated RIM's apparent change of heart is not a reaction to T-Mobile USA's Wing, which launched earlier this week, or to the coming iPhone.

T-Mobile's Wi-Fi offering is designed to offer consumers access to data because the carrier doesn't yet have a 3G network, while the iPhone's intended market is high-end, multimedia-minded users.

Nokia Develops Software for Cell Phone to Detect Lightning

May 22, 2007 9:48 AM | Nokia | Software | Technology | Comments (0)

Nokia has filed a patent for developing software that transforms a mobile phone into a signal receiver and warns the user of an approaching lightning strike.

The technology works by using the multiple receivers in a cell phone (Bluetooth, FM, tri-band GSM, Wi-Fi and RFID) to detect the radio waves emitted by lightning bolts which are electric currents.

Lightning bolts produce frequencies between 10 hertz and 5 gigahertz.  The distribution of these signals depends on how far away the lightning is.

The newly developed software interprets the radio waves, determines the distance to the lightning, and notifies the user if the lightning strikes are getting closer.

This new software will be a great safety device for outdoor enthusiasts who like to golf, jog, fish, camp, hiking, etc.
