Do you want to own your own cell phone company? Well now you can for $0. Sonopia Corporation has launched a service that makes it easy for anyone, whether a major corporation or an entrepreneurial individual, to become a mobile carrier in a matter of minutes. Sonopia handles all the backend details. Sonopia gives each virtual cell company from 3 percent to 8 percent of the monthly proceeds, depending on how many paying customers they have. |
Sonopia claims they are empowering consumers to take more control over their mobile phones and calling plans connect with other subscribers who share their interests, and support an organization or an individual they care about just by using their cell phones.
Users can choose from a wide array of individual and family calling plans similar to those offered by the major cell phone companies, starting at $40 a month for 450 peak minutes with free nights and weekend.
Sonopia also offers a set of simplified plans called "Fair & Square," featuring a larger bucket of minutes with no free off-peak periods, such as $37 for 700 minutes. There's a choice of four handsets, with prices ranging from free with a two-year contract to $130 with a one-year commitment.
Several companies and non-profits such as the National Wildlife Federation, American Medical Student Association, International Animated Film Society, and Chicago Bandits have signed up for the service.
Only time shall tell if this business model will work.
