Kyocera to Buy Sanyo Mobile Phone Business
Kyocera Corp is about to purchase Sanyo Electric's money losing mobile phone business for about 50 billion yen ($435 million). Both companies share prices went higher in approval of investors looking at it as a welcome sign of consolidation in Japan's already overcrowded handset market.
Japanese handset manufacturers such as Sanyo and others face stiff competition from larger competitors such as Nokia and Motorola, as well as a maturing market. Sanyo has been restructuring with the help of Goldman Sachs and the sale of the mobile phone unit would be the latest step by Sanyo to rid non-core or struggling businesses to focus on key operations such as rechargeable batteries.
Sanyo, which has lost money for the last three business years, has sold its stake in leasing firm Sanyo Electric Credit Co to General Electric Co this year and is seeking a buyer for its microchip unit. |

Verizon Wireless Sues Over FCC Open-Access Auction Rules
Verizon Wireless isn't happy with the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) 700 MHz recent open-access rules and has filed a lawsuit which creates uncertainty with the upcoming auction of the more than a thousand wireless airwaves licenses.
Last month the FCC added open-access requirements to a third of the spectrum to be auctioned. However, the mobile-phone industry is very opposed to attaching conditions to any of the 700 MHz spectrum, claiming that the conditions attached “violates the U.S. Constitution, violates the Administrative Procedures Act … and is arbitrary, capricious, unsupported by the substantial evidence and otherwise contrary to law.” However, the mobile-phone industry was caught off guard when AT&T unexpectedly supported FCC Chairman Kevin Martin’s 700 MHz plan. |

NTT DoCoMo Develops Low Power Chip for Super 3G Handsets
NTT DoCoMo, Inc. announced today that it has developed and successfully tested a trial large-scale-integration (LSI) chip incorporating advanced power-saving signal-processing technologies that enable the chip to work at a sufficiently low power consumption and to be made small enough to fit into forthcoming Super 3G handsets and beyond.
In the test, DoCoMo's LSI achieved a transmission rate of 200Mbps with high precision over a high-speed wireless network, while power consumption did not exceed 0.1W thanks to DoCoMo's proprietary signal-processing technology.
The LSI demodulates and separates MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) -multiplexed OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) signals transmitted in the 20MHz bandwidth from four antennas.
