Sales of Cell Phone Jammers Soaring

November 4, 2007 9:53 PM | Interesting | Comments (3)

Sales of cell phone jammers are soaring!  Although the devices are illegal in the United States, they are selling like hot cakes. Jamming cell phone radio signals is punishable by a fine of up to $11,000 for a first offense.

Mobile phone network operators are getting worried about the increasing popularity of cell phone jammers.  They fear that customers will not be able to use their cell phones, especially in an emergency, if their cell phone signal is being blocked.

Signal jammers are nothing new, but recently they have become compact and are easy to conceal.  Manufacturers are putting pressure on regulators to lift the ban, citing several situations were cell phone signal jamming should be allowed.

For instance, they could be used to jam inmates' calls in prisons, and in restaurants, hair salon owners, and doctor's offices to stop noisy customers from being disruptive.  A therapist in Ohio purchased a cell phone jammer to stop interruptions in group therapy discussions for sufferers from eating disorders.

Cell phone jammers cost as little as $50 (The CPSB costs US$48.21).  They emit a radio signal of varying power that cuts off cell phone transmissions in a 15 to 30 feet radius.  A major problem with cell phone signal jamming is that they will instantly stop the noisy cell phone user as well as the discreet ones.

Last Friday, the Wireless Association (the US mobile phone industry's trade association) asked the Federal Communications Commission to maintain its ban after two companies requested permission to use them in specific circumstances, i.e., block inmates' calls in prisons.

I just got my cell phone jammer today. I love it already. I walked down a busy pedestrian street. Some idiot was standing on the sidewalk shouting so loud you could hear him across the street. I turned on my (silent) jammer and in 10 seconds or so he was staring at his phone like he didn't know what hit him. I turned off all the cell phones in a coffee shop tonight and really enjoyed being able to talk to my friends without them constantly taking calls. Another idiot came in the door shouting on his cell phone and I turned him off. He left in a few minutes!! When you jam them they just look stupidly at their phones and say "I don't have any bars, do you?" lolol.. they don't even suspect that they've been jammed. I just smile at them pleasantly :) I can't wait to go to the bookstore tomorrow, and the gas station. You can order jammers from Taiwan, that's where I got mine!! I LOVE IT!! It's also fun jamming people driving around talking on their cell phones.
