Sprint Nexel Cuts 4,000 Jobs & Closes 125 Retail Stores

January 18, 2008 11:33 AM | Sprint Nextel | Comments (3)

Not surprisingly, Reston, Virginia based Sprint Nextel has announced it is cutting 4,000 jobs today.  The company is facing downward pressure on its profits in the coming year.

We say not surprisingly, because whenever you call Sprint's customer service it's as if you are talking to a company that is behind the times.  The company's customer service reps. usually have no idea what is going on with their products and services.   Billing errors usually takes months to fix!

Sprint is also closing 125 company-owned retail stores which is 8 percent of its total company-owned outlets.  The job cuts and store closing is a bid to "streamline" its business operations. Sprint had signed up over 500,000 new subscribers during the fourth quarter of 2007, but lost more than 600,000 existing subscribers as it battled rivals for market share.

Sprint Nextel has a total 54 million subscribers at the end of 2007.  Sprint needs to focus on training of its sales and customer service reps. to become more competitive.

Sprint has some work to do, but it is not all lost. It can be fixed.
Astute observation. I recently spent 14 hours over a two week period discussing a problem with multitudes of customer service, tech I and tech II reps. This does not include three trips to service centers, one of which tried to hijack me for $50 just to download free operating software to operate the replacement phone. When I gave in, the tech could not get it to work. All were nice except for the service center technician trying to make money on the side. None resolved the problem. Seemed like politicians, not technical experts, were manning the service desk . . . pronises and hope created without actually solving the problem.
Great product, Sprint just needs to execute better. Wimax is going to be the difference maker, but might take a couple years.
