Check for Speed Traps Using Your Cell Phone with Trapster

Now you can use your cell phone to check for speed traps with Trapster. Trapster is a free service that allows users to report police traps by pressing a button on your cell phone, or by calling a toll free number. Other user's phones will alert them as they approach the trap. Trapster learns the credibility of traps based on how many users agree. It also learns the credibility of each user, over time. Trapster is a speed trap sharing application for mobile phones, PDAs and other types of devices. It can be used with any kind of phone, but works even better if you have a phone that supports GPS or WiFi.

Trapster combines technologies such as GPS and wireless location, voice transcription, geocoding, reverse geocoding, and SMS, with a central database server. It communicates in real time, using the Internet. Trapster isn't a Web site. It's a mobile phone application and real time speed trap sharing system that happens to also have a Web site.

To use the service, go to Trapster.com and sign up for free membership. Next down load the software to your cell phone. Most newer generation cell phones and personal digital assistants can support Trapster. Now when you're motoring about and spot a police officer with a radar gun, hit "pound one" on your cellphone. Trapster knows your location, and if any other Trapster members are driving in the vicinity, they'll get an audio alert on their cellphone when they near the speed trap: "Live police! Live police!"

It seems there is an audio alert so you don't have to look down on your phone. But to report locations of the police, you have to crab your cell while driving to enter the location. That may distract the driver.
