Researchers Develop the Cell Phone / Medical Scanner
Soon cell phones may be coupled with hand held medical scanners to save lives. According to a research report today in the Journal PLoS ONE, researchers have used off the shelf cell phone technology and coupled it with a portable scanner to use as an ultrasound and X-ray machine.
It's estimate that about three-quarters of the world's population do not have access to ultrasounds, X-rays and other imagers used for everything from detecting tumors to monitoring fetuses. The cell phone /scanner could become very helpful in developing countries. Additionally, the cell phone /scanner can be used in ambulances, or rural clinics.
The cell phone /scanner works by transmitting raw scanning data to processors, which create images to relay back for viewing on the cell phone screen. The device would much cheaper than medical imaging because one processor facility could serve multiple imagers.

Your Cell Phone May Cause Allergies
| Vitals.com, a doctor evaluation website listing more than 720,000 active doctors, is looking beyond the season's usual allergy triggers and bringing awareness to a new allergy phenomenon brought on by the prevalent use of modern technology. The increased use of cell phones and other wireless technologies have brought on hotly contested debates with claims that exposure to radiation and microwaves generated by excessive use have negatively impacted those with electromagnetic sensitivity, causing skin rashes, fatigue and headaches. For those already suffering from common allergies, studies also suggest that cell phone use is a trigger, increasing sensitivity to allergens and potentially making typical allergic reactions such as watery eyes or a runny nose worse. Cell phones also affect users with skin allergies who may be sensitive to various metals and materials used in manufacturing. When nickel, one of the leading reactors of skin allergies, is used in the production of cell phone casings and batteries, cell phone users become susceptible to allergic contact dermatitis, an allergy that causes rashes and skin outbreaks. |

IDC Reports Worldwide Cell Phone Market Grows 14.3%
| According to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, the worldwide mobile phone market experienced an expected sequential downturn in shipments following a busy holiday quarter. Vendors shipped a total of 291.6 million units during the first quarter of 2008 (1Q08), down 11.6% from the 330.8 million units shipped during the previous quarter (4Q07) and up 14.3% from the 255.0 million units shipped during 1Q07. While the first quarter results are in line with IDC's 2008 forecast, concerns over the economy may negatively impact handset purchases as the year progresses. Demand for handsets in the low cost segment will remain present in certain emerging markets throughout 2008, driving worldwide shipment growth. In contrast, more mature regions are increasingly characterized by highly competitive markets for replacement handsets and somewhat slower shipment growth. | |
