Cable Companies Kill Sprint-Nextel's Pivot Joint Venture

April 23, 2008 6:15 PM | Sprint Nextel | Comments (0)

Sprint's Pivot is dead. After investing $100 million in the venture, Comcast, Cox Communications and Time Warner Cable are quietly pulling the plug on the joint cell-phone venture with Sprint Nextel Corp.

The three U.S. largest cable Comcast Corp said they have stopped marketing the Pivot service and plan in the coming weeks to give their Pivot customers the option to switch to Sprint's traditional  mobile phone plans.

Pivot customers will be able to keep their cell phones and their cell phone numbers and receive a month's free Sprint service for their trouble. They'll also be given a set period once they've switched over to cancel their contract without penalties.

Pivot was announced in November 2005 so the cable operators could offer a "quadruple play"; which includes voice, video, Internet and wireless products to battle against the telephone companies who added TV to their arsenals.
