Germany's Deutsche Telekom May Buy Sprint

May 5, 2008 11:11 AM | Sprint Nextel | Comments (0)

Germany’s Deutsche Telekom is looking into a possible bid for US mobile provider Sprint Nextel who has been losing money.

Sprint, the number three US mobile provider, if purchased by Deutsche Telekom, would be allied to Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile USA affiliate and would become a major rival for AT&T who is the US number one wireless provider.

Sprint may be a good deal because of the weak dollar against the euro. Sprint’s 2007 losses were 30 billion dollars in exceptional costs relating to its acquisition of Nextel. As a result, Sprint suspended indefinitely dividend payments the end of February.

Sprint also announced last January that it was cutting 4,000 jobs and closing 125 company-owned retail stores in anticipation of downward profits in the coming year.
