The New York Times reported that Samsung has unveiled the third “eco-phone”, the E200 Eco, which has parts made from bioplastics. The handset packaging is also made of recycled materials. Bioplastics materials are extracted from corn. The E200 Eco is the first to have an entire case made from bioplastic. Cheil Industries, which is a part of the Samsung Group, has been developing environmentally friendly materials. The E200 Eco features a 1.3-megapixel camera, Video messaging, and a MP3 player. The E200 Eco will be available in Europe next month. Not word when the handset will be available in the U.S. | ![]() |
The F268 has an alarm “feature” that reminds users to unplug their chargers when the phone is fully charged.
Samsung is not the only company working on "eco-phones". Last December Nokia introduced the 3110 Evolve and last May, it was reported that Nokia plans to bring 40 new biodegradable models to market by the end of 2008. In 2006 NEC introduced a bioplastic phone in Japan and has been using plant-derived materials in its LaVie laptop line since 2004.
