SanDisk to Sell 16GB Mobile Phone Memory Cards
SanDisk Corporation today announced it is bringing to market its 16GB microSDHC and Memory Stick Micro (M2) mobile memory cards - the world’s largest removable storage capacity for mobile phones. Best Buy Mobile and Verizon Wireless stores are the first major retail outlets in the United States to carry the 16GB capacity.
The fingernail-sized 16GB memory cards allow consumers to “wake up” the many storage-intensive features offered by today’s portable handsets such as music and video playback, high-definition digital camera functions, gaming and GPS applications. In addition to the mobile phone, consumers can use the 16GB microSDHC card in a multitude of other devices, including video cameras, GPS receivers or MP3 players with a microSD slots such as SanDisk’s Sansa players. |

Samsung & Verizon Wireless Announced the Samsung U430
Samsung and Verizon Wireless today announced the U430; an entry-level flip phone that includes very basic features. It is limited to CDMA 1x data, however, it does has Bluetooth. It also comes with a VGA camera with Nite Shot capabilities for low-light picture taking. Pricing and availability have not yet been disclosed.

Sprint has debuted a next-generation 4G wireless network based on mobile WiMAX technology in Baltimore, heralding the start of a new era for wireless consumers as Sprint officially launched XOHM mobile broadband commercial service in the first major U.S. city.

Samsung Introduces the Pixon 8 Megapixel Camera Phone
Samsung today introduced the Pixon, which comes with an 8 megapixel camera with auto-focus, fast-shutter, face detection, geo-tagging and LED flash. The handset resembles a camera with a 3.2-inch touch screen which measures 13.8mm thick.

Visa & U.S. Bank Announce Plans to Launch Mobile Money Transfer Pilot
Visa Inc. and U.S. Bank today announced plans to launch a mobile money transfer pilot program to allow registered Visa cardholders in the United States to use their mobile phones to securely send funds directly to another registered Visa cardholder's account. The pilot, which is intended to begin by the end of 2008, is the first U.S.-based trial testing mobile money transfers between Visa accounts.
Money transfer service is a key component of Visa's mobile strategy that seeks to harness the proliferation of mobile devices by making them multi-function payment tools. The services provided in this U.S. trial complement what Visa already offers by way of money transfer service to consumers in 13 countries in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. In addition to supporting money transfers through mobile devices, Visa enables the service through other existing channels, including bank branches, ATMs, the Internet, and kiosks. |

Visa to Offer Mobile Payment Services via Google's Android Platform
Visa Inc. today announced plans to make mobile payment-related services broadly available to United States consumers by the end of the year. Central to this effort is Visa's delivery of mobile applications for the Android platform, which will be available for download on Android-powered handsets and initially available to Chase Visa cardholders.
The first set of services that Visa is planning to develop for Android will allow Chase Visa cardholders to receive notifications to their mobile devices about transaction activity on their accounts; obtain offers from a wide array of merchants; and use the built-in location-based technology developed by Google to quickly map nearby merchants where they can redeem Visa offers and locate ATMs that accept Visa. | |
Nokia App to Collect Data via Cell Phones for Critical Social Issues
Nokia today announced Nokia Data Gathering, a new software solution to help public sector and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) quickly and accurately collect data on critical issues such as disease outbreaks or disaster relief via mobile devices. The Amazonas State Health Department in Brazil will be the first to use the solution as part of its fight against dengue fever in the city of Manaus in Northern Brazil. The Nokia Data Gathering software will be available to public sector organizations and NGOs free of charge. It can be used to create tailored questionnaires and distribute them to multiple mobile phones using a normal mobile network. Field personnel surveying local conditions can quickly complete the questionnaires and immediately transmit their findings to a central database. The system also allows organizations to geo-tag data with GPS location information to build a more detailed picture of very local conditions. Accurate and timely information is essential when monitoring the effectiveness of disease prevention measures and preventing further outbreaks. |

Samsung to Preload ScanLife Barcode Apps on Camera Phones
Scanbuy, a provider of mobile marketing solutions, today announced that it has secured a global agreement with Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. to preload the ScanLife mobile 2D barcode application on Samsung’s camera phones. Samsung will begin selling these phones in Spain, Italy, and Denmark starting as early as next month. Availability will quickly expand to other major markets including Mexico and the United States.
