Dell Working on Smartphone with Touch Screen

January 30, 2009 11:59 AM | Smartphone | Comments (0)

According to published reports Dell wants to get into cell phones following Google's and Apple's lead.  Dell is planning to enter the cell phone market because of sliding sales of personal computers.

The Texas-based computer manufacturer, who is the second-largest producer of PCs in the world, has been designing cell phone prototypes for more than a year.

Dell is planning to develop a touchscreen smartphone (based on Google's Android Operating system) to compete with Apple Inc.’s very successful iPhone and Research in Motion’s Blackberry smartphones.

Dell recently announced that it had cut two Microsoft deals which includes switching its pre-installed default search tool from Google to Microsoft’s Live Search toolbar. The company also purchased the Microsoft consulting and solutions portion of Allin Corp. in a stock deal worth $12 million.

“Sheer fear sapped the confidence of consumers, enterprises and corporate users across the board,” says Jake Saunders, Asia-Pacific Vice-President of ABI Research. “As a result, 2008 signed out the year with 1.21 billion handsets shipped for an annual growth of 5.4%. Just a year ago we had +16%”.
