Mobile Market Highest Growth Segment for the Semiconductor Industry

August 31, 2009 9:26 AM | Interesting | Comments (0)

The mobile market is the highest growth end segment for the semiconductor industry.  Many consumer electronics devices still use MCUs and ASICs.  However, devices such as smartphones, MIDs, and mini-notes require higher level functionality, programmability, and connectivity.  As a result, these mobile consumer devices are increasingly shifting toward merchant market processors, reports In-Stat.

Merchant market processors offer higher levels of integration and performance while reducing the device Original Equipment Manufacturer’s (OEMs) cost and time to market.  This is evident as the mobile market for merchant processing solutions is expected to grow at a 22.3% CAGR through 2013 with the highest total unit growth resulting from handheld applications like smartphones and MIDs.  By 2013, the market is projected to grow to about 775 million units.

This year is on track to see 144 million handsets shipped, with forecasts for 2011 at just over 300 million.

Cellular Base Stations Contributes to Greenhouse Gases and Pollution

August 26, 2009 10:09 AM | Interesting | Comments (0)

In-Stat has reported that in the last few years, the number of worldwide cellular base stations has exploded from the hundreds of thousands to the many millions, creating greenhouse gases and pollution from the power required to run them. Base stations on an electric grid aren’t the real problem, but as cellular spreads to billions of people in emerging countries, off-grid base stations, which are usually powered by diesel generators running 24/7, proliferate.

“While diesel pollution is an environmental issue, what bothers operators the most is the cost of powering and securing the generators,” says Allen Nogee, In-Stat analyst. “Diesel fuel has to be trucked to remote sites, and theft of diesel fuel and equipment can cost operators millions of dollars. The solution is for operators to at least partially power remote base stations with wind turbines, solar panels, or both. This is truly a case where it pays to be green.”

15 Reasons to Be Concerned About Cellphones and Brain Tumors

August 26, 2009 9:41 AM | Interesting | Comments (0)

A report was released by EM Radiation Research Trust to government leaders and media that details eleven design flaws of the 13-country, Telecom-funded Interphone study.  (See video to the right)

The Interphone study, begun in 1999, was intended to determine the risks of brain tumors, but its full publication has been held up for years. Components of this study published to date reveal what the authors call a "systemic-skew", greatly underestimating brain tumor risk.

The design flaws include categorizing subjects who used portable phones (which emit the same microwave radiation as cellphones,) as 'unexposed'; exclusion of many types of brain tumors; exclusion of people who had died, or were too ill to be interviewed, as a consequence of their brain tumor; and exclusion of children and young adults, who are more vulnerable.
