Toshiba Creates Cell Phone Translation Software (Japanese, English, Chinese)

Toshiba has created a new translation for cell phones. The app entails voice recognition, a trilingual translation system and synthesis. (See video to the left)
The app is a scaled down version of a PC app already sold by Toshiba in Japan that can translate between Japanese, English and Chinese.
The translator:
First runs the speech recognition first try to determine the language and what was said.
It then uses 1 of 2 translation methods (rule-based machine translation or statistical machine translation) to parse the sentence and break it into its components.
The translation is then generated and a speech synthesis engines outputs the results.
