Nokia Research Center Develops "Mobile Radar" for Mobile Phones

Nokia Research Center has developed a “Mobile Radar” that may appear in their handsets in the near future. Unveiled during “Demo House 2010” at Aalto University near Nokia’s headquarters in Espoo, the “Mobile Radar” measures an object’s distance, speed, and direction using a mobile device. It’s essentially the same technology the police use in their radars. |
In the video above, researcher Jani Ollikainen use his hand to adjust the music player’s volume, without touching the device. Even with an object in his way, the radar still works. In the second demo, researchers Terhi Rautiainen and Risto Kaunisto measure the distance, speed, and direction of a human walking.
Nokia believes the possibilities are endless with this technology. How about a home security system that alerts you if there’s movement in your house or games that uses the technology?
