Skype Blocks fring Video Calls

fring announced today that it is being forced to stop its 4 years of Skype interconnectivity following threat of legal action. Skype’s anti-competitive ambush comes in the wake of fring’s mobile video calling on iPhone 4 launch, which continues to set the standard in rich mobile internet communication.

Since its foundation in 2006, fring’s rich mobile communications have been available to both fring users and open 3rd party networks including GoogleTalk, SIP, Twitter and, until now, Skype. However, despite fring expanding its network capacity over the last days to serve its enlarged user base, Skype is refusing to allow fring to restore connectivity to Skype.

Nokia Divests MetaCarta to Qbase

Nokia announced today that it has divested MetaCarta Inc. to Qbase Holdings LLC, a privately held US based company. Nokia will retain MetaCarta's geographic intelligence technology, which it is incorporating in its local search and other services. MetaCarta serves primarily government as well as oil and gas customers. MetaCarta was acquired by Nokia in April 2010.
 

 

eBay App for Android Available Internationally

eBay has made global shopping easier today by internationalizing its popular eBay application for Android, which is now available for free download in the Android Market in Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom. The new, updated international Android application will feature a number of key upgrades to “My eBay,” immediate checkout through PayPal, and voice search capabilities unique to the Android platform.

“The popularity of eBay’s mobile shopping applications is quickly spreading across multiple geographies,” said Steve Yankovich, vice president of mobile, eBay Inc. “More than half of eBay’s mobile gross merchandise volume comes from outside of the United States. As we seek to reduce friction in commerce, we are taking advantage of the unique features of each mobile platform. In the case of our Android app, we’re leveraging the Android’s voice search capabilities to make searching easier and faster.”
 

 

Sprint Launches 4G Service Markets in New York, California, Oregon and Washington

Sprint today launched 4G service in Rochester, N.Y., Syracuse, N.Y., Merced, Calif., Visalia, Calif., Eugene, Ore., Tri-Cities, Wash., and Yakima, Wash. These seven metropolitan areas add to the growing list of markets that are 4G-enabled and mark the first 4G launches for New York and California. With today's seven metro launches, Sprint now offers 4G in 43 markets and expects to have 4G service in many more - including Los Angeles, New York and Miami - by the end of 2010.

With 4G, Sprint defines a new era in wireless. Sprint 4G customers experience fast mobile downloads, seamless streaming video, and turbo-charged Web browsing. This new wireless technology also allows for video chat via the recently released HTC EVO(TM) 4G, America's first 3G/4G wireless smartphone.

YouTube Upgrades YouTube Mobile

YouTube announced that YouTube Mobile now receives more than 100 million video playbacks a day which is roughly the number of daily playbacks that YouTube.com was streaming when they joined forces with Google in 2006. YouTube launched YouTube on mobile devices in 2007 with about 1,000 videos available on the mobile site (m.youtube.com). Today its YouTube now receives more than 100 million video playbacks per day. Symbian Foundation Announces PDK 3.0.0 is Now Available

The Symbian Foundation announced that PDK 3.0.0 is now available.  It is the first PDK based on Symbian^3 (S^3) since it achieved its Functionally Complete (FC) milestone on 16th June. The PDK contains a full build of the Symbian^3 platform along with the corresponding source code, giving developers access to the S^3 feature set and providing the community with the means to engage with us on taking S^3 into devices.

S^3 represents a major step forward in the Symbian platform, providing a greatly improved user experience, multiple personalised homescreens, an exciting and advanced multimedia experience including HDMI support, the introduction of Next Generation Graphics, better data networking and much, much more! Sprint and Samsung Telecommunications America today introduced a stylish addition to its growing portfolio of Android devices with Samsung Intercept. In addition to the 3.2-inch, touch-screen display, 3.2 MP camera and video, and full slide-out QWERTY keyboard, Samsung Intercept comes preloaded with social apps and one-touch picture posting to the top social sites.

Borders Launches Kobo eReading Apps for BlackBerrry, Android, iPhone and iPad

Kobo, a global eReading service, today announced that it is powering Borders’ eReading applications and eBook store at borders.com/ebooks. Borders leverages Kobo’s “Powered By” program which provides a flexible solution for partners to launch an eBook store that uses Kobo’s content and technology.

US Spending on Mobile Display Ads Will Almost Quadruple in 5 Years

Mobile advertising is a young and relatively small market today. But over the next five years, spending on mobile display ads in the United States, estimated at just under $313 million today, will almost quadruple to exceed $1.2 billion in 2015.

ABI Research practice director Neil Strother says, “A survey conducted by ABI Research in February found that 28% of the mobile subscribers queried accessed the mobile Internet daily. This is a huge increase over the number doing so just 14 months ago, and is a powerful driver for the mobile marketing and advertising market.”

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) today announced the formal adoption of Bluetooth Core Specification Version 4.0, with the hallmark feature, low energy technology. This final step in the adoption process signals to Bluetooth SIG members that the Bluetooth SIG Qualification Program is now open for qualification of all Bluetooth  product types to the Version 4.0 Specification.
