Microsoft Kills Kin - Social Networking Devices

| Microsoft has killed off its Kin social networking devices currently being sold by Verizon Wireless. The Kin One and Kin Two were launched early last May and touted as a phone designed for people who are actively navigating their social lives. KIN blends the phone, online services and the PC featuring a touch screen and slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Microsoft scrapped Kin because they want to focus exclusively on Windows Phone 7 and will not ship Kin in Europe this fall as planned. Additionally, Microsoft is integrating their Kin team with the Windows Phone 7 team, incorporating valuable ideas and technologies from Kin into future Windows Phone releases. Microsoft will continue to work with Verizon in the U.S. to sell current KIN phones. It's unclear if there will ever be software updates to the phones, including one that was planned for this summer. Verizon Wireless has reduced the price on the two Kin models by as much as 50%. | ![]() |
