BlackBerry WebWorks SDK for Tablet OS Version 2.1 Now Available

With the release of v2.1 of the BlackBerry WebWorks SDK for Tablet OS, new APIs and application functionality are now available for download! For those following the project on github, this release has also been known as the “Delta” release outlined on the BlackBerry WebWorks roadmap.

The goals for this release are focused on narrowing the gap between the BlackBerry WebWorks API functionality available on the BlackBerry Smartphone OS and the APIs available on the Tablet OS, as well as exposing more BlackBerry PlayBook tablet development functionality to web developers.


Citrix GoToMeeting and Citrix Receiver Pre-Loaded on DROID 3 by Motorola

Samsung Galaxy S II Shows New Design Approach Including Exynos Dual-Core Processor

This spring, Samsung launched the Galaxy S II, a new flagship member of its Android smartphone lineup. As part of its new Teardown Research Service, ABI Research has dismantled, analyzed, and tested the device down to the component level. The conclusion? If you are looking to keep up with the latest technology in 2011, the Galaxy S II is a good place to start.

According to ABI Research vice president of engineering James Mielke, “Samsung started from scratch with this phone: almost every component is new. Its application processor is the most powerful on the market at present. It is the first to use the Samsung Exynos 4210 dual-core application processor (a competitor to NVIDIA’s dual-core Tegra 2). The name Exynos combines Greek words for ‘smart’ and ‘green,’ indicating Samsung’s energy-efficiency goals for the design.”


"Download Map Area" Added to Labs in Google Maps for Android

Google introduced a new experimental feature called “Download map area."  With Download map area if you are visiting an unfamiliar location, Google Maps for mobile will help you get an idea of how close you are to your destination, where streets and landmarks are in relation to each other, or just for getting “un-lost.”

If you don’t have a data signal, or you’re abroad and don’t have a data plan you’ll never need to carry a paper map again. The “Download map area” lab in Google Maps 5.7 for Android is a step in making that statement true even when you’re offline.  For more information visit



Share Your Docs with Improved Google Docs for Mobile

Google has announced that they have updated the look of Google Docs for mobile browsers and added the ability to sort, narrow, and share multiple docs in your mobile docs list.

To get started:

  • Go to from your supported device’s browser.
  • Press Sort to organize the list of docs visible in the mobile browser, or press Narrow by to specify the subset of docs you’d like to see.

To share from your mobile docs list:

  • Select one or more documents.
  • Press the Share button, and select Share.
  • Get the link to share for public or unlisted docs, or Email as attachment.

Sharing a doc in your mobile browser works the same way as it does on the desktop.

Verizon Wireless Makes It Easy For Customers To Monitor And Manage Data Usage

Verizon Wireless smartphone and tablet customers have a variety of ways to monitor and manage their wireless data usage, including new text message alerts that will be sent to smartphone customers to help them keep track of monthly domestic data usage.

Starting this week, smartphone users will begin to receive free text message alerts when their data usage crosses thresholds of 50 percent, 75 percent, 90 percent, 100 percent and 110 percent of their data plans’ monthly allowances. Customers who are registered with My Verizon, the online account management tool, may also request email alerts and can add up to three additional email addresses to receive the notifications. My Verizon users also have the option of suppressing the 50 percent and 75 percent alerts. Email alerts for the same threshold levels are already available to tablet, netbook, PC card and Mobile Broadband device customers on usage-based plans.

comScore Reports May 2011 U.S. Mobile Subscriber Market Share

comScore, Inc., a leader in measuring the digital world, today released data from the comScore MobiLens service, reporting key trends in the U.S. mobile phone industry during the three month average period ending May 2011. The study surveyed more than 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers and found Samsung to be the top handset manufacturer overall with 24.8 percent market share. Google Android led among smartphone platforms with 38.1 percent market share.

OEM Market Share

For the three month average period ending in May, 234 million Americans ages 13 and older used mobile devices. Device manufacturer Samsung ranked as the top OEM with 24.8 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers, followed by LG with 21.1 percent share and Motorola with 15.1 percent share. Apple strengthened its position at #4 with 8.7 percent share of mobile subscribers (up 1.2 percentage points), while RIM rounded out the top five with 8.1 percent share.

Mobile Payments Market to Almost Triple in value by 2015

A new study from Juniper Research has determined that the total value of mobile payments for digital and physical goods, money transfers and NFC (Near Field Communications) transactions will reach $670bn by 2015, up from $240bn this year. These forecasts represent the gross merchandise value of all purchases or the value of money being transferred.

The new Mobile Payment Strategies report revealed that all segments will exhibit 2x to 3x growth over the next five years. This growth will be driven by the rapid adoption of mobile ticketing, NFC contactless payments, physical goods purchases and money transfers as people in both developed and developing countries use their devices for everyday transactions.


LightSquared Secures $265 Million in Additional Financing

LightSquared, the nation's first wholesale-only integrated 4G-LTE wireless broadband and satellite network, announced today that it has raised $265 million. The capital was drawn from both existing investors as well as new investors in the company. LightSquared will use these funds for general corporate purposes, which includes constructing its world-class 4G-LTE wholesale network. Over the last 12 months LightSquared has raised over $2.3 billion.

Ruckus to Provide KDDI Advanced Wi-Fi Products in Japan
