Alltel Wireless today announced the launch of Axcess Family Finder, a service that enables parents to determine the location of their child's Axcess Family Finder-capable phone from the Web or their mobile phone. Axcess Family Finder features easy-to-use interactive maps to monitor or guide family members to specific locations. The service also allows parents to identify specific areas that their children frequent, including movie theaters and parks, by using the Axcess Family Finder Web site, www.alltel.com/familyfinder. The Axcess Family Finder Web site also supports added security measures with Scheduled Checks which allows parents to register specific locations to be tracked during certain times. U.S. regulators announced recently that they have proposed fining Sprint Nextel Corp, Alltel Corp and United States Cellular Corp for failing to meet the new 911 standards. The fine is $2.825 million.
U.S. regulators claim that the companies have filed to meet new stricter standards for being able to locate cellular telephone callers in an emergency. The new standards require all carriers to ensure that by the end of 2005, 95 percent of their subscribers have handsets with enhancements that would enable emergency workers to locate someone who has dialed 911 from a cellular telephone.
There have been no comments from all three companies about the proposed fines.
