After a few days after hitting store shelves, Samsung Instinct has become the fastest-selling EVDO handset in Sprint history. Instinct was first available exclusively to current Sprint customers on June 19 breaking records for the initial launch of any Sprint product. Instinct became available to all customers on June 20; sales continued to be brisk with Instinct breaking Sprint's record for the first week of sales for any device.
The record pace of Instinct sales has led to temporary shortages of the device at some locations across the United States. Sprint and Samsung are diligently working around the clock to increase inventory in all sales channels. Samsung has increased efforts to deliver new supplies of Instinct on a daily basis and manufacturing plants are operating at full capacity to keep up with the demand.
Instinct was recently named Best in Show in the third annual Emerging Technology (E-Tech) Award competition in April at CTIA Wireless 2008. Instinct was also honored as Most Innovative Product at CTIA Wireless 2008 by the editors of LAPTOP, a leading mobile technology magazine. CNET also recognized Instinct as the Best Cell Phone in its annual Cream of the Crop CTIA 2008 awards.

ARM, Hynix Semiconductor, Inc., LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, Silicon Image, Inc., Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB, and STMicroelectronics today announced the formation of a working group committed to creating an open standard for next-generation memory interface technology targeting mobile devices.
This first-of-its-kind memory standard for dynamic random access memory (DRAM), named Serial Port Memory Technology (SPMT), will enable extended battery life, bandwidth flexibility, significantly reduced pin count, lower power demand and multiple ports by using a serial interface instead of the parallel interface commonly used in today's memory devices.
This technology will be ideal for mobile handset manufacturers and consumers because it will dramatically extend battery life while allowing high-performance media-rich applications that will be the norm on next-generation mobile phones. |

Samsung Electronics has unveiled its first mobile phone to support faster upload speeds using HSUPA (high-speed uplink packet access) technology. The SCH-M470 is a slider handset that can send data at up to 2M bps (bits per second) when on an HSUPA network.
Conventional WCDMA (wideband code division multiple access) can upload and download at about 384k bps, however, mobile carriers are now deploying new technology to enable faster data transmission.
For cell phone users, HSUPA allows less time spent waiting to download pictures, video or music attachments on messages to be sent. Samsung claims that using HSUPA will take just 30 seconds to send an average MP3 music file.
The SCH-M470 phone also features WiFi, Bluetooth and a 2 megapixel camera. Sorry, it’s not available in the U.S. as yet. It is only available in South Korea only and costs 600,000 won (US$615).

The Haptic was been launched in South Korea and has a large touch-screen display that also provides haptic feedback, which is information transmitted via the sense of touch, when using certain functions on the device. For example, when the volume of the radio is changed, the phone simulates both the sound and feel of the "clicks" on an old-style volume knob on a real radio. The Haptic comes with 22 kinds of vibration in total built into the phone. The Anycall Haptic has a 3.2-inch widescreen display, a 2-megapixel digital camera, full Internet browser, Bluetooth 2.0 and terrestrial digital TV reception. It cost US$700 to $800 in South Korea. Samsung hasn’t announced if it might be available elsewhere. The Haptic is the second new handset launched in South Korea that plays on the sense of touch. LG Electronics' LG-SH240 has a layer of silicon over the front of the phone to give it a little elasticity and make it feel to users like they're touching human skin. |
