LiMo Foundation and the Linux Foundation today announced a new open source project, Tizen, to develop a Linux-based device software platform. Hosted at the Linux Foundation, Tizen is a standards-based, cross-architecture software platform which supports multiple device categories including smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, netbooks and in-vehicle infotainment systems. The initial release of Tizen is targeted for Q1 2012, enabling first devices to come to market in mid-2012.
Tizen combines the best open source technologies from LiMo and the Linux Foundation and adds a robust and flexible standards-based HTML5 and WAC web development environment within which device-independent applications can be produced efficiently for unconstrained cross-platform deployment. Verizon Wireless and Chomp announced that Chomp’s search technology will provide an integrated search function for apps in the newly redesigned Verizon Apps, enabling customers to discover and purchase the apps they want on Verizon Wireless Android smartphones. Chomp’s app search engine will power all Verizon Android app searches within Verizon Apps.
Verizon Apps customers will be able to search for apps not just by the name of the app, but based on what the app does. Chomp’s search technology makes it possible to search for “kid’s games,” “expense trackers” or any description and instantly see the best apps for that search term. Parents worry when their teenager is behind the wheel of a car. Sprint is helping ease the minds of parents by launching Sprint Drive First, a new application that automatically locks a mobile phone when a car is moving more than 10 mph, disabling phone functionality, directing incoming calls to voice mail, and silencing distracting alerts for emails and text messages. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 20 percent of injury crashes in 2009 involved reports of distracted driving. Of those killed in distracted-driving-related crashes, 995 involved reports of a mobile phone as a distraction (18 percent of fatalities in distraction-related crashes). |

US Airways is helping speed up the check-in process and improve convenience for its customers with mobile boarding pass technology from NCR Corporation.
Following check-in, customers receive an email containing a digitally signed and encrypted 2D bar code that is compatible with current imager-based airport scanners and boarding gate readers. Customers are able to scan the mobile boarding pass at the kiosk if necessary or bypass check-in lines and head straight to the security checkpoint where the electronic bar code is scanned and validated. The bar code can then be used at the gate for boarding. | |

Nuance Communications, Inc. today announced that the OnStar RemoteLink mobile app for iPhone now features voice recognition capabilities powered by Dragon. OnStar integrated the Nuance’s voice recognition technology as part of the Nuance Mobile Developer Program.
OnStar’s RemoteLink mobile app, available for Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick and GMC owners with eligible 2010 or 2011 model year vehicles, enables drivers to stay connected with remote access to real-time vehicle data and the ability to perform commands, such as unlocking doors from anywhere. And now with voice capabilities from Nuance, RemoteLink consumers are able to take advantage of RemoteLink’s new navigation features by simply speaking a destination.
