Vodafone is to trial HSPA+, an evolution of today’s radio access HSPA technology, to assess its potential to deliver even higher data rates through the upgrade of existing network equipment. Vodafone will work alongside Ericsson, Huawei and Qualcomm to trial Release 7 HSPA+ (also known as HSPA Evolution) which has the potential to handle data even more efficiently than today’s HSPA technology. The initiative will help to establish whether HSPA+ is capable of delivering data throughput rates of up to 28.8 Mbps compared to the 14.4 Mbps maximum offered by today’s HSPA networks. If successful, the technology has the potential to extend the life of today’s HSPA infrastructure still further. HSPA+ technology is designed to offer higher throughput than HSPA through its use of multiple antennae on both base stations and handsets (Multiple Input Multiple Output) as well as the deployment of a complex modulation technique called 64-QAM HSDPA. |

Facebook yesterday launched a platform for mobile operators to make its social networking application work better on portable devices. Last month it was rumored that Nokia and Facebook are working on a deal that would place Facebook on Nokia handsets.
However, Vodafone is the first operator to use the Facebook for Mobile Operators platform and has started services in the United Kingdom and Germany. Vodafone will later expand the program to Greece, Italy, Spain, Ireland, and Portugal.
The platform gives operators a set of technical specifications intended to resolve problems when using Facebook on a cell phone rather than a PC, such as smoothing out login problems and opening up other features. The platform also includes other specifications designed to stop abuse of Facebook, such as spamming. When someone sends their first MMS with a photo to their profile, the user is sent back a confirmation message with a code or a link.

Europe's Mobile operator O2 has beaten rival Vodafone with winning the contract to sell Apple's iPhone. O2 should have the iPhone on sale in UK before Christmas. The iPhone just went on sale last week in the US with people forming long lines and waiting hours to be the first to own the handset.
It seems that T-Mobile may win the contract in Germany to sell the iPhone. So far Apple and AT&T have sold 700,000 iPhones in the US according to a report. Early reviews of the iPhone have been very positive. It's also been reported that hackers have successfully cracked the iPhone / iTunes activation tie in and are close to unlocking the unit. Unlocking the unit will then allow the iPhone to be used on other networks.

Europe's biggest telecoms want to keep more of cell phone advertising in their pockets that hand it over to Google or Yahoo. Some of Europe's biggest telecoms groups will hold talks next week about creating a mobile phone search engine.
Vodafone, France Telecom, Telefonica, Deutsche Telekom, Hutchison Whampoa, Telecom Italia and American network Cingular will come together for talks at the industry's annual trade show in Barcelona, Spain, Britain's Sunday Telegraph reported. The operators believe that creating their own search engine could help them to "retain a greater share of advertising revenues", it added. "There is a big play in mobile search that we need to be part of, and we are exploring those options at a very high level," an unnamed British executive at one of the companies involved told the paper.
However, The implications for existing deals between the networks and the US search companies are not clear. Google has signed up Vodafone, Hutchison's 3 and T-Mobile, while Yahoo! has signed up Vodafone and 3. This will be interesting.
